On Tuesday 22 April 2008, Yemen LNG conducted the testing and selection for the third intake of cadets to the Marine Cadet Training Scheme. Successful cadets will join the crews operating the vessels chartered to Yemen LNG which will transport Yemen’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to Total Gas & Power Ltd, one of Yemen LNG’s long term buyers.

The testing and selection event was opened with a short presentation introducing Yemen LNG in general and the purpose of the programme.

AP Moeller and MISC (the companies owning the Yemen LNG chartered vessels as well as training the workforce which will crew them afterwards) also gave presentations on their profiles as well as their training programmes. Candidates then took a written test and went through a series of interviews and other physical examinations, including eyesight examination and swimming ability.

Candidates were interested to learn more about the marine cadetship scheme, which is funded by Yemen LNG and were extremely keen to join the programme if selected. “Becoming a sailor has been my dream since I was a kid,” said one of the candidates. “I find working at sea more interesting than working on land,” said another, “that’s why I want to join this team,” he added.

AP Moeller and MISC hope to recruit 21 Yemeni marine cadets who will undertake a 4-year extensive theoretical and practical training programmes in two groups, one with MISC in Malaysia and another with AP Moeller in India. After completion of the training scheme, successful trainees will be accredited as professional mariners and will join the ship-owners’ workforce. They will not work directly for Yemen LNG, but the programme is part and parcel of Yemen LNG’s commitment to expanding job and development opportunities for Yemenis. The Company aims to reach 90 percent Yemenisation of its own workforce by the end of 2015.

The testing and selection process was attended by representatives from Ministry of Oil and Minerals, Yemen LNG and the ship-owners-MISC and AP Moller, The successful students will start training in mid-year after a short period of refresher training in the Yemen LNG Training Centre.
